Farmer’s Pride project – Network Proposal published

Genetic resources

Farmer’s Pride is an EU funded project (Coordination and support action) under the EU’s Horizon2020 programme. The main goal of the project is to conceive and set up a regional network in Europe for in situ conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources. Euroseeds is a partner to the Farmers’ Pride Consortium representing the commercial breeders, in other words, the potential sustainable users of the plant genetic resources conserved. The project is for a period of 3 years and is currently in its final year. The final dissemination conference is planned for October 2020.

To find out more about the project, please visit the Farmer’s Pride official project website.

Recently, the project completed one of the most important tasks; partners agreed upon and finalized the concept note for the proposal on how to set up the network. The Network Proposal introduces the project, describes the rationale for the creation of the network and outlines its key objectives. It then discusses who should become a member to the network and how this will be possible. Last, the concept note explains how the network is supposed to function once it is set up and officially launched.

A summarized version of the network proposal can be found here. The main idea of the network is to gather European sites where landraces and crop wild relatives are being conserved under one umbrella in order to make sure that those who manage these sites and conserve such plant genetic resources can work according to some agreed principles; that those who need can benefit from technical support for better conservation; that the diverse actors within and across countries can better connect to and learn from each other; that there is more coherent and clear information on how such resources can be made available for sustainable use.

The concept note is now available on the project website with the aim of being consulted by as many interested parties as possible and of getting many potential future network members interested in joining the setting up and development of the network.

Those actors who are interested to follow the development of the network or eventually have relevant activities, are encouraged to sign up to the Farmer’s Pride mailing list.
