Euroseeds welcomes the political agreement reached between the Council of the EU and the European Parliament on the revision of the EU legislation on plant reproductive material (PRM).

The new framework preserves the key principles that underpin the EU seed system, including variety registration, seed quality requirements and traceability, while modernising procedures, promoting digitalisation and introducing greater flexibility for specific operators and niche markets.

“This agreement is another important element of the modernisation of plant breeding and seed-related legislation in the EU,” said Garlich von Essen, Secretary General and CEO of Euroseeds. “It maintains the successful and internationally aligned principles of the established system while modernising processes, driving digitalisation and helping to speed up product release and reduce costs.”

Euroseeds also welcomed the efforts of the European Parliament’s rapporteur, Herbert Dorfmann, and the Cypriot Presidency in bringing the negotiations to a successful conclusion.

Following formal adoption and the development of delegated and implementing acts, the new Regulation is expected to apply four years after its entry into force.
