Euroseeds welcomes the successful conclusion of trilogue negotiations on New Genomic Techniques (NGTs), a key step toward strengthening innovation, competitiveness and resilience in European agriculture.

Following months of discussions and a strong call for action from 26 agri-food organisations, EU co-legislators reached agreement on a new Regulation for NGT plants. The outcome largely maintains the original objective of creating an enabling and science-based framework for developing and cultivating conventional-like NGT plants. This is expected to support farmers with improved crop varieties and contribute to Europe’s wider goals on food security, competitiveness and the bioeconomy.

Garlich von Essen, Secretary General and CEO of Euroseeds, said:
This agreement is a signal Europe’s seed sector and farmers urgently needed. The EU is finally ready to enable its breeders and seed producers to use innovative tools that can help our farmers face climate change, new pests and diseases, and increasing production challenges.

At the same time, numerous additional elements have been added to the text that require careful analysis of potential impact on practices, costs and administrative burden for both operators and authorities.

Euroseeds recognises the strong leadership of the Danish Council Presidency and the commitment of the European Parliament’s rapporteur, whose efforts were instrumental in securing the agreement, and stands ready to support regulators in implementing the NGT Regulation.
