On Tuesday 23rd July, all 20 standing committees and four subcommittees of the European Parliament held their constitutive meetings to elect their Chair and Vice-Chairs. Each committee bureau, consisting of a Chair and up to four Vice-Chairs, is elected for a two-and-a-half-year mandate.
Committees are essential to the legislative process, handling legislative proposals, appointing negotiating teams for talks with EU ministers, adopting reports, organizing hearings, and scrutinizing other EU bodies and institutions.
